Law Enforcement
Law Enforcement plays a crucial role in determining the jail population, in particular by deciding who gets arrested. As well, law enforcement controls the conditions of the jail. The County Sheriff’s office has a jail division which gives law enforcement a large role in the conditions of the jail. The jail division is responsible for prisoner housing, transportation and court security and provides additional supervision in jails. The jail is managed by a Major (Jail Administrator) who is appointed by the Sheriff and a certified peace officer of Ohio. The Jail Administrator refers directly to the Chief deputy, who is second in command in the Sheriff’s office. There are also two captains who report to the Jail Administrator. The Administrative captain oversees a variety of matters including programming and contract services such as food, maintenance, mental health services, and medical services. The Captain of Operations oversees housing, transportation, inmate work programs and transportation. The jail receives support from the 3 other divisions of the Sheriff’s department for matters that require law enforcement involvement or investigations such as training, budget, personnel. The Sheriff's office, as such, is responsible for the state of the county jail.
